Domaine Ducroux in Thulon

2008 Christian Ducroux Regnié Sans Souffre!

Exciting news for Natural Wine lovers - we've received our allocation for the year of Christian Ducroux's 2008 Regnie Sans Souffre! (And a little of the regular cuvee as well) Ducroux is a master of natural wine-making - his vineyards have been organic (now certified Biodynamic by Demeter) since 1985 giving the grapes the nutrients and natural defenses necessary for no-sulfur vinifications. Also important is a high level of acidity which inhibits the lactic bacteria from attacking the sugars in the wine. Ducroux's vines, which are 60 to 80 years-old, are at high elevation in poor granit soils, in the hamlet of Thulon, producing high acidity and low alcohol, normally around 12 degrees. Ducroux makes all compost on the estate and uses horses in the vineyard to minimise soil compaction. The fermentations are in wood, with wild yeasts, and the wines are bottled without filtration. In 2008, he picked in early October - yields were very low due to poor weather during the flowering. The wines are rounder and more deeply fruited than the elegant 2007's. From barrel last winter the 2008 showed lovely floral and red fruit aromas with deep blackberry fruit and earthy notes on the palate. PLEASE NOTE that this wine will need aeration! The 2007 Sans Souffre (from bottle) had aromas of reduction which needed about 30 minutes to dissipate, after which the nose was subtle and gorgeous with black and red fruits with hints of pepper and mint. Peak drinking for the 2008 should begin in the spring of 2010 and last for three to five years.

Ducroux 2009 Regnie

Christian Ducroux farms about 10 acres of old massale selection vines in the hamlet of Thulon, above Regnie. He inherited the estate from his family in 1970 and converted to organic farming in 1985, later receiving Biodynamic certification from Demeter. His vineyard is blanketed in green and bears no relation to the herbicided wasteland prevalent in the Beaujolais and elswhere. Some rows have been removed to plant flowers and trees for biodiversity and plowing is done principally with his two horses. Harvesting is by hand using a horse-drawn wagon and fermentations are natural with wild yeasts. Alcohol levels are low here due to the poor soil, giving old-fashioned Beaujolais with beautiful aromatics. Not only does Monsieur Ducroux practice ecologically healthy and balanced agriculture, he makes lovely wines with pure complex fruit that we urge you to try. This bottling of 2009 Regnie was produced with zero added sulfites and has remarkably complex aromatics of red fruits, plum, spice and citrus. The palate is light and silky, with fairly high acidity and finishes cleanly. The alcohol level is a refreshingly low 12%. This is a brilliant Beaujolais a l'ancien, made by one of the most dedicated natural winemakers in France. Imported by CSW.

Ducroux 2007 Regnie Patience (Sans Souffre)

Ducroux's Patience bottling is essentially a press-wine, although in the austere 2007 vintage the wine remains relatively light in color and body. On day one the aromatics are quite lovely showing high toned raspberry fruit, the palate has zingy acidity and good material which darkens considerably by the second day open with more black fruit and earthy flavors. A fascinating natural wine but admittedly less crowd-pleasing than the 2009 regular bottling.
