2008 Germany: Donnhoff, Prum, Adam, W. Schaefer! Pick Your Cherries!It's that time of year again: officially summer and officially time to drink Riesling and pluck up your share of this year's collector items.
It's fair to repeat here the mantra of the vintage: 2008 is the right kind of vintage at the right time. Very little Auslese was made, and the Kabinetts and Spatleses are on the restrained side, especially considering what our palates are acclimated to after the last couple of vintages. But we needed a drink-me vintage, and there will be a great place for these wines - it IS an acid-freak-rock-head vintage, and consequently I am happier with the balance of the wines that have some sort of perceptible RS - as unhip as that may make me. I think these wines will surprise us yet.

Adam, A.J. 2009 Mosel Riesling Dhron Hofberg KabinettJust arrived in-store, and this wine is very young and cherubic - with all the delicious juicy "stuffing" of the 2009 vintage. Adam, A.J. 2008 Mosel Riesling Dhron Hofberg SpatleseSo graceful is this wine, you would never know it has 95 grams of residual sugar. Just 10% of the grapes were affected by botrytis, lending to the concentration without compromising the purity. More depth and intensity than either the Kabinett or the Dhroner - green and fuji apple notes, dripping with ripeness and in perfect balance. Schaefer, Willi 2008 Mosel Estate RieslingOne of the best of the Estate Rieslings of 2008. At the moment the nose still shows a bit of pleasant sponti (aka the slightly funky wild yeast fermentation aroma).
